| Production In Focus: Elumatec SBZ 150 |
In 2007 ASI Limited realized the need for a CNC driven machine center to improve the efficiency and quality of the fabrication of aluminum components for its unitized wall systems. After evaluating several manufacturers the Elumatec SBZ 150 machining center was selected to fill the need. The machine was installed in March 2008.
The machine center has the capability of processing an extrusion up to 30 feet in length. This work area is divided into two work stations to facilitate a continuous workflow. While processing a part in one station it is possible to simultaneously load and unload the other work station. This reduces the manufacturing time considerably and optimizes the machine’s performance.
It is equipped with an automatic tool changer that can change tools between runs, while the head is moving from one location or station to the next. It holds approximately eight different tools at one time, including a 16 inch diameter carbide tipped saw blade. Drilling, routing, tapping, thread milling, notching, compound mitering and cutting are just a few of the machine’s capabilities. Five different sides of a profile can be machined without touching the piece (front, top, back, left end and right end).
The machine is connected to our network allowing the operator to upload programs directly. The programs are generated in the plant engineering department using Elucad software. This software is specifically designed for this machine. Once the profile of an extrusion is imported into the software, it is turned into a 3D model. This is when all operations are applied to the part.
The machine center is a valuable asset to the fabrication process and has eliminated fabrication errors, reduced cost per unit and supports the ASI Limited mission: “Pursuing Excellence In Everything We Do”.
