Univ. of Chicago Residence Hall – Unitized Stone Installation

The rain-screen panel system utilized at the University of Chicago’s New Residence Hall ASILIMITED created a one-of-a-kind system for the installation of the limestone and metal panels. The project consists of approximately 4,800 unitized panels. The design starts with the custom wall anchors which were shop-assembled to facilitate the field’s operation. Once installed these anchors can be adjusted to account for the field tolerances before the anchors are locked into place. The unitized strongback framing on which the stone is shop-applied is CNC fabricated to achieve the required tolerances. The strongback framing includes the slide anchor attachment that mates with the custom wall anchor. As the units are lowered into place, the slide anchor interlocks with the wall anchor and the 800 to 1,000 pound panel is dead-loaded to the anchor. The horizontal extrusion at the bottom of the unitized strongback frame interlocks with the matching top horizontal on the unit below and the units are stacked together. The strongback’s slide anchor includes a set screw to plumb and level the unit and to “dial in” each unit’s final up-and-down position. In the Shop ASILIMITED utilized its custom drilling machine from Germany to precisely locate and drill the limestone as required for the special hardware needed to hang the individual stones on the strongbacks. The result is a clean appearance of no exposed fasteners and an efficient system of unitizing and erecting materials that have been traditionally regarded as hand-set installations.
