ASILIMITED was awarded the contract for over 298,000 square feet of exterior Rain Screen facade work on the new University of Chicago-Residence Hall. The work consists of all exterior light gauge framing, sheathing, weather barrier, 165,000 SF of custom unitized Limestone rainscreen panels, 80,000 SF of interior glazed curtain wall, 33,000 SF of composite and plate paneling, and 925 custom operable punched openings. Multiple ornamental details consisting of sunshades, cable trellises, glass canopies and aluminum trims accent this impressive design. The design is being lead by the national firm of Goody Clancy from Boston, MA and construction services being performed by Gilbane Building Company.
UPDATE: ASILIMITED has begun to set Unitized Stone on the University of Chicago project. The crew will be setting 12-18 units per day. In all, the project calls for over 4000 units, which weigh approximately 800-lbs each. The Unitized Stone will cover 168,000 square feet. This impressive project is scheduled for completion in March 2009.
5/6/09 Update- Miscellaneous scopes in progress on the West Courtyard 95% complete with East nearing completion in weeks to come of stone, trim, panels, sun shades, and cladding, with addition the architectural louvers well underway. Steel is being completed for the wood windows and eyebrow features, trims at the curtain walls and punched windows start to compliment the stone. In addition the completion of the AVB (air vapor barrier) has taken place as stone panels continue to be set. Phase 1 (floors 1 thru 4) production is well under way with over 400 units produced and PH1 fabrication and assembly is on-going. In addition sunshades are being installed and soffit panels in the passageways all of which give the finishing touch to the exterior facade.
6/12/09 - The West CTYD has completed with punch list items underway, stone installation continues in the East CTYD and also is close to wrapping up. Stone installation is on going for the North elevation of the ET and anchors are well ahead progressing down the East elevation. Metal panel rainscreen crews are wrapping up individual set units on the North elevation at this time. Misc. scope items such as the Interior lobby panels and 6th floor roof panels are complete. The metal siding, copings, elevator override panels are all underway - WT and MT are both 90% complete and crews continue to complete installation along the exterior.
8/3/09 - The rain-screen panel system utilized at the University of Chicago’s New Residence Hall ASILIMITED created a one-of-a-kind system for the installation of the limestone and metal panels. The project consists of approximately 4,800 unitized panels. The design starts with the custom wall anchors which were shop-assembled to facilitate the field’s operation. Once installed these anchors can be adjusted to account for the field tolerances before the anchors are locked into place. The unitized strongback framing on which the stone is shop-applied is CNC fabricated to achieve the required tolerances. The strongback framing includes the slide anchor attachment that mates with the custom wall anchor. As the units are lowered into place, the slide anchor interlocks with the wall anchor and the 800 to 1,000 pound panel is dead-loaded to the anchor. The horizontal extrusion at the bottom of the unitized strongback frame interlocks with the matching top horizontal on the unit below and the units are stacked together. The strongback’s slide anchor includes a set screw to plumb and level the unit and to “dial in” each unit’s final up-and-down position. In the Shop ASILIMITED utilized its custom drilling machine from Germany to precisely locate and drill the limestone as required for the special hardware needed to hang the individual stones on the strongbacks. The result is a clean appearance of no exposed fasteners and an efficient system of unitizing and erecting materials that have been traditionally regarded as hand-set installations. This project is near final completion as final punch list items are underway.
8/24/09 - The trellises in the W CTYD are in final stages- these are the only items that remain to be complete in the W CTYD. E CTYD will follow - with wrapping up sunshades and trellises before it will be complete. Site work (by others) is on-going on every elevation - requiring constant coordination and on-going daily interaction.
9/21/09- Students officially opened the new University of Chicago Residence Hall September 20th and 21st moving in for the fall quarter. This exciting new facility will house 811 students located on the south campus.
